Amisha (Amy) Padnani, an award-winning senior staff editor at The New York Times, created the Overlooked project to highlight underrepresented individuals. After noticing the obituaries section was dominated by white men, she launched Overlooked in 2018, featuring stories of remarkable women, people of color, and members of the L.G.B.T.Q. and disability communities. A book published in November 2023 includes 66 Overlooked obituaries, with about two dozen never before appearing in The Times. Amy will be reading from Overlooked and answering audience questions. Joining Amy in conversation will be Harry Weil, Vice President of Education and Public Programs at The Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
