The Sacred Harp tunebook represents a tradition of community singing that goes back to Revolutionary-era New England and is today widespread and lively. Sacred Harp (or fasola, or four-shape shapenote) singing has a distinctive sound, text repertory, organization, visual image and look on the page (the triangular, oval, square, and diamond note heads).

In this workshop, members of the New York shapenote community will introduce the tradition and teach you how to read and use the shapes, and we will sing some characteristic and favorite tunes together.

This event is in partnership with NYC Sacred Harp and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.
