6/15 GREEN SPRING FESTIVAL AND PLANT SALE
6/15 Green, a community garden in the South Slope (at the intersection of 6th Avenue and 15th Street in Brooklyn) is hosting its annual Spring Festival and Plant Sale on Saturday, May 4th. Join us as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary this year! Festivities start at 10:30 a.m., and include activities for children, live music, and a bake sale. The rain date will be Sunday, May 5th (the street closure permit is only for Saturday). A potluck is scheduled to start at 4:00. Some of the activities will take place on 15th Street, which will be closed off from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The plant sale will take place from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. (there may be pop-up extensions of the plant sale before and after the festival, dates and times to be announced; find us on Facebook for details).
6/15 Green’s Spring Festival will begin–as it always does–with joyful music for the children. Starting time for the children’s show is 10:30 AM. Singer/Music Teacher Laura Wilson, who many remember as a member of the Sparrow Sisters, and currently with Musicolor Method Park Slope, will be performing with surprise guests. Brooke Dramer, Eman Rashid, and Jenny Amanda Hurwitz will be returning yet again with their mix of Beatles music and folk music for kids; their performance starts at 11:00 a.m. They will be joined by their menagerie of hand puppets: Ringo the Octopus, Puff the Dragon, Augie and Hippolyta Hippo, and enough puppets to go around so that the children will get to join them onstage during the finale. After the concert, children can sit under a beautiful plum tree and hear local authors Kathryn Holmes and Corey Ann Haydu read aloud to them. Corey will read her latest book, A Place for Feelings. Kathryn will read Tally Tuttle Turns Into a Turtle from her popular chapter book series, Class Critters. For a sample of one of the performances from last year, follow this link: https://youtu.be/cH0_pSx_Z0Q?si=w6gC8WKbTjMdyM3T. Live music for a wider audience will continue through the afternoon and into the evening, ending around 8:00 p.m.
At 1:00 pm, singer/songwriter/guitarist Jenny Amanda Hurwitz will return to the stage to perform some of her original songs for audiences of all ages.
At 1:30, garden member Tracy Fitz (flute & voice) and Daniel Sofaer (guitar & voice) perform together as SoGoBrook, eclectic vibes for change. Tracy will also perform as Gorilla Baroque, playing W. A. Mozart’s K285A Flute Quartet, Joseph Haydn’s Flute Quartet in G Op. 5 #2, Georg Muffat’s Suite Florilegium, No. 2, and Something, Sound of Silence, and Octopus’s Garden.
Other performers will include garden member and cellist Anahit Gaskill, performing at 12:15; Tracy Wuischpard and friends, also playing classical music performing at 2:30 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., garden member David Emmett (piano & guitar) will take the stage to perform New Orleans, Americana, and originals. The Eagle Colt Combo will perform jazz from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Sarah Mucho, singer, musician, songwriter, and cabaret artist will also be returning to perform at 6/15 Green, closing out the evening’s musical performances. See her website for more information: (https://www.sarahmuchomusic.com/about)
6/15 Green is partnering with artists from Park Slope Windsor Terrace Artists group, serving as venue #4 in over a dozen sites during their annual Open Studios. Two of their artists- Linda Schneider and Jan Orzeck (https://www.artspswt.com/directory2024os#!biz/id/65fcbcfc67735203a10d839e)- will be at the garden. Linda Schneider is a talented painter specializing in our landscape. She has many bright paintings of the Vermont countryside, but for this garden fence exhibition she’ll feature luscious Brooklyn scenes. Both – along with dozens of other ArtsPSWT artists – are also showing all weekend (and next!) at Ossam Gallery on 7th Street and at the new Shapeshifter Lounge on Union Street. Local artist and garden member Rich Garr is curating the art exhibition. Nitza Wagoner will be presenting material from The Open Space Gallery which will be displayed on the other side of the garden, near the barbeque and picnic table.
