An exhibition by Scarlett Lingwood
Curated by Ruby Lindsey

‘Paradise, a light in our stars’ speaks of my love of long-distance relationships, the carp situated in a lush green garden in Bangkok, what warmth feels like on a cold day. A macro and micro vision of how a map can be interpreted. Purple, green, orange, blue … the Silence.  – Scarlett Lingwood

Scarlett Lingwood is a British multi-media artist who has lived and worked in NYC for the last eight years. This solo presentation, the artist’s first exhibition at FiveMyles, includes painting, drawing, collage and ceramics.

Lingwood has developed her own visual vocabulary over the last decade whilst making art and travelling to different corners of the world. A trip to Koh Mak, an island off the east coast of Thailand with a close friend provided particular inspiration for this body of work. Crystal blue beaches and deep starry night skies are the backdrop to works that conjure feelings of adventure, expanse, and quiet inner comfort.

Curious lines explore canvas and paper, bright colors calmly beckon, small fish swim in tropical garden ponds. In Lingwood’s hands plates become fish bowls and flower pots. Sharply precise triangular canvases vibrate out of their hard edges; Fuzzy, loosely geometric red, orange and blue checkerboard patterns cover the surface in a billowing veil, unmistakably hand-drawn.

The power of Lingwood’s art lies in its instinctive nature. Seldom reworked, there is a purity and feeling of quiet discovery that can only come from a pure source of inner light, perhaps the stars.
