April 6, 7 pm11 pm.
$15 in advance / $20 day of
album release poster square

Oropendola celebrates the release of her debut full length album “Waiting for the Sky to Speak” with an eve of musical camaraderie and catharsis. Her kaleidoscopic chamber alt-pop will be played with an ensemble of musical angels on keys, synths, 3 part harmony, clarinet, flute, flugelhorn, guitar, bass, and drums (feat. Elizabeth LoPiccolo, Gabby Sherba, Kristina Teuschler, Stephen Becker, Derek Weaving, and Mike Gebhart, with special guests).

Alena Spanger and Katy Pinke will open up the show, & there will be a hand painted clothing pop-up by Mello Jello!

Oropendola is the chamber-alt-pop project of Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter-keyboardist-arranger Joanna Schubert. She is lit up by the eclecticism and primal theatricality of Kate Bush, the surrealism of Alice in Wonderland, and the melodic arrangements of The Beatles. Her music has been called “expansive and colorful” (Under the Radar Mag) and “at the meeting point between arms in the air pop perfection and something altogether more jarring and intriguing” (For the Rabbits). Joanna has also been a touring member of both Half Waif and Barrie, and sung with Grammy-nominated Gnawa musician Samir Langus.

Alena Spanger is a singer/keyboardist/songwriter based in Brooklyn. Weaving together angular art-pop songcraft, unorthodox vocalizations, and intricate arrangements, Spanger’s songs construct their own elaborate and immersive worlds.

Katy Pinke is a New-York-based singer songwriter, guitarist, and theatre-maker/actor who writes her songs like plays she can act in. Her songs find common ground with the wayward compositional structures of Bill Callahan and Syd Barrett and the disarming delivery of Blossom Dearie and Connie Converse. She is currently readying her debut album.
