Dual-solo show features presentations by Long Island residents Stephanie Angelo & Nicole Franz emphasizing female empowerment

Huntington Art Center has unveiled its fall art showcase: a pair of installations by Long Island-based artists Stephanie Angelo and Nicole Franz, running now until December 24.

Angelo, a Long Island native, is presenting “Freedom Fighters,” a series of portraits inviting audiences to see what it’s like to walk in the shoes of notable women — literally. Her paintings depict what the shoes of prominent women such as Rosa Parks, Molly Pitcher, and Kathrine Switzer would look like at the end of the day, knowing the role each played pushing forward women’s rights and advancing cultural change.

Franz is offering “Dream in Color,” a unique collection of mixed-media pieces created with recycled and “up-cycled” materials encompassing portraits and still-life productions. Currently, Franz holds the position of visiting artist educator in addition to being a professional artist working out of her Long Island studio.

“Huntington Art Center is delighted to share the work of Ms. Angelo and Ms. Franz with our patrons,” Curtis stated. “This talented duo offers viewers pieces that inspire both appreciation and introspection. We are proud to invite the community to see with their own eyes why we chose this dynamic pair to co-lead our fall showcase.”

“After bringing ‘Freedom Fighters’ to audiences across the country, it’s a joy to see this collection merging history and contemporary events on display in my local community at the Huntington Art Center,” Angelo said. “As we work to raise the voices of women in society today, it’s important to remember the difficult work those who preceded us accomplished. This exhibition seeks to emphasize those achievements — from the ground-up.”

“My art is my outlet,” Franz explained of her process. “I never know what my pieces are going to look like until they are complete. I love that about my work. I’m inspired by complex, strong, emotional, brave and beautiful people. I want to encourage people to be empowered. Mental health and mental-health awareness is important to me; I try to capture this in my art. I am raising daughters and I want to encourage them to be kind, happy, fearless, and supported. When I am working in the studio, the world around me shuts down. The work consumes me. The process is therapeutic.”
