ON AUGUST 17: CASEY OPSTAD – “GRID IT OUT: PAINT CHIP PIXEL ART”
——
BIO: Casey Opstad was born and raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota. After graduating in 2000 from the University of North Dakota, he moved to New York City with friends with whom he attended school out east. From 2000 to 2008, he sold luggage, waited tables, built theater sets, washed rocks, painted fences, printed wedding invites, ran ethernet cable, and did whatever odd jobs he needed to pay the rent. From 2009 to 2011, Casey lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he attended graduate school at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Upon graduation, he moved back to New York City and worked mainly painting and drawing murals and doing commission work for clients in the area. In 2016, he moved to Philadelphia to concentrate solely on his creative process. In 2019, he moved to Missoula, Montana and in June 2022 he will move back to New York because he tried out other cities, and New York is just the best. Clients Casey has worked with in the last five years include PayPal, New York Department of Transportation, DUMBO BID (Archway art, Watergate), General Assembly, Kenneth Cole, Venmo, Bitly, and New York University.
Project: Making a pixelated picture with painting chip samples. The end result will be an abstract image broken down into pixels. Each person will grid off their 18″x24″ paper into 1/2′ squares, or 1/4″ squares, depending on how involved they want to be. Then, each person will gather paint swatches and cut them into 1/2″ or 1/4″ squares. Once that is done, each person will start to lay out the design on their paper without gluing anything down. Once they are satisfied with their design, it’s time to glue the squares down.
Supplies: If a person wishes to work from a picture to work from please bring it along.
You will need to draw on the picture you are bringing. Otherwise, the final image will be more a design than an image.
