Cultural Ecologies Series: Premiere Of Helix On Gowanus Canal

September 23, 6:30 pm8 pm.
Free on-shore seats, Canoes by donation

Join Unheard-of//Ensemble and the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club on the water for the third concert in the Cultural Ecologies series. They present the world premiere of a 30-minute multimedia commission from composer NNUX (Ana Lopez-Reyes), recent recipient Alarm Will Sound’s Matt Marks Impact Fund, and video artist Martha Maya.

Helix is a piece that simulates a spiral from pre-Hispanic to contemporary times, contemplating the cycles and inheritance in women’s collective trauma, which has determined the ways we’ve been shaped as individuals through generations. NNUX and Martha Maya’s work looks at the breaking of cycles in women’s generational collective trauma. Helix explores their backgrounds and relationships with this trauma, and how femicide impacts Latinx communities around the world. Musically, the piece will also explore the idea of these sonic loops that gradually change and break. NNUX and Martha Maya will join the ensemble for the premiere. NNUX will perform an opening set of her electronic music.
