Concert on the Water: Cultural Ecologies Series

This last performance of the 2024 Cultural Ecologies season on 9/28 (6pm canoe launch, 6:30pm Concert) features emerging composers at the cutting edge of music and tech including Erich Barganier, Han Geul Lee, Catherine Phang, Alyssa Wixson, and Annie Nikunen, each developing new multimedia works exploring the relationship to different aspects of our environment through technological constructs, representation and collective memory of community before and after industrialization, and our interconnectedness from the personal to the interstellar. Audience members who reserve a canoe seat can explore the canal from 6 to 6:30pm while experiencing Unheard-of and Brian Ellis’s Gowanus Sound Paddle.
Special Guest band Fox Indigo closes out the season with a party/reception after the premieres!
About the Series: The Cultural Ecologies Series features world premieres and cutting edge music by artists exploring climate change, race, technology’s impact on our mental health, and feminism presented in a setting that brings people closer together in an open and adventurous way. all on one of America’s most well known superfund sites. These free performances take place at the Gowanus Dredgers Bunker (2 19th Street, Brooklyn). The audience is able to attend the performance either via canoe seat reservation (reserved in advance via donation to the Dredgers), sitting on one of the Dredgers’ new docks, or on shore (ADA accessible). Each performance opens with a talk given by members of the Dredgers about their work advocating for publicly available water access in the Canal.
