
Billie & Beyond, A New Music Series Featuring Mali Wilson

The Billie Holiday Theatre – one of the nation’s preeminent arts and culture organizations – will present the finale for its inaugural season of BILLIE & BEYOND, the institution’s new music series inspired by the artistry and legacy of its iconic namesake – jazz icon Billie Holiday. Launched in Fall, 2024, the series features the next generation of female vocalists, instrumentalists, DJ’s across various musical genres from contemporary Jazz to Rhythm & Blues to Hip-Hop and more. Closing out the BILLIE & BEYOND season with a bang, this next edition of the series will feature Grammy-nominated producer, Emmy-winning actress and songstress Mali Wilson and will be held on Friday, April 4 to commemorate the 110th birthday of Billie Holiday. The show begins at 8PM with doors open at 7PM for a pre-reception experience.
For years, Mali Wilson has been a driving force in the music industry behind the scenes as a producer, music executive, and artist advocate known for nurturing the talents of some of the industry’s biggest artists such as Ne-Yo, Whitney Houston, Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz, Taylor Swift, and Toni Braxton, to name a few. Mali’s renowned “Midas touch” has not only shaped the careers of a diverse array of artists but has also had an unparalleled cultural impact and redefined the nexus of music. In 2020, she made the courageous decision to step into the spotlight to share her own voice and story with the world as an artist. Characterized by an unwavering dedication to artistry, innovation, and community, Mali’s music – encompassing her unique genre-bending fusion of Soul, Gospel, Jazz and Blues— reflects her life’s journey and her passion for art with purpose. For her BILLIE & BEYOND show, audiences can expect a beautiful, soulful experience from the gifted singer who will perform original tunes sharing her story and messages of love and resilience, Additionally, Wilson will celebrate the legacy of Billie Holiday with some of her favorite Lady Day songs as well as pay tribute to her dear mentor and friend, Angie Stone, including a special performance of her latest single ‘I’m Not Sorry’ – which was praised by the late illustrious soul legend as ‘a balm to the soul.’
Hosted by Brooklyn-based poet and singer Shanelle Gabriel, the evening will also feature a curated experience with light bites, cocktails, music provided by the popular DJ Nyla and a special opening set from multifaceted Jazz singer and activist Candice Hoyes known for making music that celebrates Black womanhood.
