Brooklyn Contra will host its second free contra dance of the year in Prospect Park this Sunday from 2:30 pm to 6 pm. All are welcome to a fun, energizing, and social afternoon of live fiddle music and dance. Beginners to contra dance are encouraged to attend an introductory lesson at 2:30 p.m. Come with friends or alone; no partner necessary.

There will be live music by the driving fiddle and piano of  Cake Jam with dance instruction by expert caller Maia McCormick

The event is at Prospect Park’s Concert Grove Pavilion, just south of the Lincoln Road entrance to the park.

About contra dancing:

If swing dancing and square dancing met in a bar, you’d get contra. Contra is danced to Bluegrass, Old-Time, or Celtic tunes, performed by live bands. An evolution of northern Appalachian folk dancing, it is danced with a partner, but bringing a partner is not necessary — you can always find one on the dance floor. All dances are taught, and the instructions (calls) are provided from the stage, by the caller, throughout the dance. If you can walk, you can contra!
